What is a Green Card?

The United States Green Card, officially known as a Permanent Resident Card, is one of the most highly wanted around the world. It’s a legal document that grants foreign nationals permanent residency status in the United States. A US green card can open up a world of
opportunities for individuals and families aspiring to live, work, and study in the United States.

A U.S Green Card is an identification document that allows a non-US citizen to permanently reside and work in the United States. The card is proof of an individual’s lawful permanent residency status, granting them many rights and privileges enjoyed by US citizens. Green Card holders can reside in the U.S indefinitely.

Different Paths to Obtaining a US Green Card

There are several ways individuals can obtain a US Green Card. The most common paths include:

  • Family Sponsorship: US citizens or green card holders can sponsor immediate family members, including spouses, parents, children, and siblings.
  • Employment-Based: Individuals with special skills, work experience, or job offers from US employers can qualify for employment-based Green Cards. There are different categories for individuals with extraordinary abilities, professionals with advanced degrees or exceptional abilities, and skilled and unskilled workers.
  • Diversity Visa Lottery: Each year, the US government randomly selects a limited number of applicants from countries with low rates of immigration through the Diversity Visa Lottery program. Winners receive the opportunity to apply for permanent residency.
  • Refugees or Humanitarian Aid: Individuals who have been granted refuge or asylum in the United States become eligible for a Green Card after a specific period of time.

The Application Process – DV Lottery Program

The DV Lottery Program was originally launched back in 1995, providing 55,000 annual lucky winners which are chosen at random, a chance to get a US Green Card. The process to enter the U.S. Green Card lottery program requires you to fill out an application, provide passport photos and more. It is important to ensure all the guidelines are properly followed and everything is submitted without issues to ensure your application does not get rejected. If you are one of the 55,000 winners selected, you will be required to attend an in-person interview to complete the process.

Once you passed the interview successfully it’s important to note that permanent residency status needs to be maintained by following immigration laws, and there may be certain conditions or restrictions associated with your Green Card. Some of the benefits of having a U.S. Green Card include:

  • Provide foreign nationals with an opportunity to become permanent residents of the United States.
  • Opening doors to a wide range of benefits and opportunities.
  • Access to great schools.
  • Loads of employment opportunities.
  • And much more.
